In The Ring, Antim Straus delivers a mesmerizing political thriller with a series of mysterious explosions, covert operations, and a clandestine effort to destabilize the nation’s capital through orchestrated acts of sabotage. This fourth and final book in the Geoffrey Wines series follows Washington Post reporter Geoffrey Wines and cyber expert Jimmy Olsen as they unravel a web of intrigue involving a secretive “Ring” that plans chaos through explosives, cyber warfare, and political manipulation. When a man is killed while trying to blow up a column with a bomb made from a BBQ propane tank, the link to key leaders in the city becomes disturbing. The conspiracy involves the sheriff, local community leaders, a controversial cryptocurrency mining operation, and a deadly plot to ignite nationwide unrest. Can Geoffrey and Jimmy expose the dangerous scheme before the nation descends into chaos?
Antim Straus vividly depicts three complex characters: Geoffrey Wines, the meticulous reporter; Jimmy Olsen, the brilliant hacker; and Sheriff Roy Teague, the conflicted lawman, all of whom are as believable as they are likable. The author piqued my curiosity and sustained it through the well-crafted suspense. The setting takes you from the tranquil serenity of Deep Creek Lake to the bustling political epicenter of Washington, D.C., and the author infuses the places and locales with vivid imagery. Themes of deception, trust, and the impact of technology and terrorism are well-developed. The author skillfully executes the suspenseful pacing, detailed technical descriptions, and layered dialogues to create a tense atmosphere where every clue could determine the difference between peace and chaos. The Ring captivated me from the start and kept me racing through the pages, thanks to the incredible storytelling, the intriguing characters, and the well-imagined and excellently accomplished conflict.
