“What truly matters isn’t the outside, but what’s inside.” Sometimes life doesn’t make it easy to accept these simple words. In Kateryna Dronova’s The Ring of Beauty, both Tilda and her father, Tobin, have important lessons to learn. The two have been cursed, all because Tobin made a thoughtless choice so many years ago. Now he must give his sixteen-year-old daughter a magical ring that will make her appear beautiful to everyone outside the home. You see, she really wasn’t beautiful, at least, not visually. But she was hardworking and kind. Now, she has to make an important decision: whether to accept the ring and appear beautiful, especially to Edwin, the person she truly loves, or to accept her fate of being the way she’s always been. What will she choose? And what will be the consequences of her choice?

Kateryna Dronova’s children’s story, The Ring of Beauty, is a fable that will capture the hearts of all who read it, whether young or young at heart. The story is well-organized, and the author uses simple language to help young readers follow along and improve their reading skills. I love Maryna Gargai's illustrations, which are bright, bold, and colorful, and add another magical dimension to this story, making the book a treasure in itself. The plot follows Tilda as she accepts the ring from her father, but finds his words of warning difficult to understand, at least at first. I’m impressed with how the author weaves important messages into the story, including: be careful what you wish for; beauty lies within and visual beauty doesn’t define who we really are, nor does it determine our value; we all face the consequences of our actions; the choices we make in life are what determines our power; and self-acceptance is important, we must love ourselves for who and what we are, not what some magical ring can make of us. Loved it!
