The Rise of Septra'Kaal (Masterminds Incorporated) by Chad Lee Erway is another super helping of children's mystery and horror. This one has sixth-grader Jonah Mortimer hearing things--a bird talking to him--but it turns out to be a reality, not his imagination. The bird warns him of a long-buried and long-forgotten evil reawakening under Falter's Rise. Septra'Kaal is a pharaoh that has risen from the dead, and he's bringing his undead army of mummies with him to Wolverton. Riding a huge scorpion, Septra'Kaal is Masterminds' worst nightmare come to life as he brings terrible plagues along with him to set loose on Wolverton. Will the Masterminds be able to battle this fearsome foe, or will it be the end?

Erway has done it again with another exciting, chilling tale for kids. His fondness for the genre really shines through, and you get the feeling he just loves using his vivid imagination to entertain young audiences. I like this book especially for the mummy aspect since it isn't often used in monster stories compared to the vampire, werewolf, ghost, etc. themes. This plot is of biblical proportions and will have you on the edge of your seat as you read how whiz kid Jonah and the gang tackle this one. The imagery is vivid and alive, the voices of the characters ring true, and the overall impact will leave kids wanting the next book quickly. Some children's mystery/suspense/horror stories fall short, but not this one. Children, and many adults, will be thoroughly entertained by The Rise of Septra'Kaal (Masterminds Incorporated) by Chad Lee Erway.
