The Rising by Karen MacLeod-Wilkie is a fantasy novel that intertwines the destinies of characters in the Fairy Realm and on Earth. Asa, guided by his mentor Donovan, embarks on a perilous journey with Queen Amethyst to uncover the source of a distressing message from the trees, leading to the discovery of new powers within himself. Simultaneously, on Earth, a young dwarf named Rebel embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue his father, facing life-altering choices along the way. This is the third novel in The Prophecy Series and picks up where the last action left off.
Author Karen MacLeod-Wilkie skillfully crafts a richly detailed fantasy world, seamlessly blending the magical with the emotional depth of her characters' journeys to make for some really thrilling moments charged with passion and atmosphere. Her ability to interweave multiple storylines with such clarity and ease gives the novel complexity and intrigue as these different strands converge to form a bigger picture and some real high-stakes drama. The narrative is confidently penned to offer smooth conversations, gripping dramatic tension, and sudden twists, making for a captivating and immersive read in a world that the author clearly knows intimately at this point in the series. The ongoing development of Asa and Rebel as characters are handled with nuance and some brilliant moments of speech and thought, allowing us to connect with their struggles and growth as if we’re right there with them, feeling it all beside them. Overall, The Rising is a brilliant continuation of a strong fantasy series that I’d certainly recommend to fans of the genre everywhere for their next immersive read.
