The Scalebearers tells the story of five strangers who wake up chained to one another. Kaj, a dark elf and thief, Valma, a member of the town guard, Gillian, an apprentice Mage, Ava, a local farm girl, and Ortensia, the town’s very own princess. Together they navigate through the underground cell they woke up in and try to make their way to the surface. Solving puzzles akin to an escape room, secrets are revealed and loyalties tested. And with the events of the previous night still a little hazy, our five strangers try to figure out their connection to each other. This action-packed story filled with adventure and magic by Sweet is a must-read!
Going on this adventure alongside Kaj, Valma, Gillian, Ava, and Cici (Ortensia) was amazing, and I was virtually right beside them, trying to figure out who the bad guys were and how the five of them fit into the devious plan at work. As the title suggests, our heroes are tasked with putting the world to a right of sorts. We see how each of them bears this weight when battling their inner demons and fighting their dark-robed foes. Despite the cover giving us an apt description of our heroes, it’s not recommended for children. Sweet includes all major tropes in The Scalebearers with mystery, magic, murder, romance, comedy, underground shrines, and dark deities! The story was epic!
