The Secret in Mossy Swamp by Rita Monette is a children’s adventure story. Nikki lives with her family in a small houseboat and has to share a room with Jesse, her kid brother who takes great delight in torturing her. Nikki decides she needs her own space and builds herself a tree house; no boys are allowed! Something odd is going on at Bayou Platter though – things keep going missing and so do people. Little moss-covered stick dolls are being used to replace the missing and these are locally seen as signs from the Rougarou. But is it really the Rougarou or someone trying to make people think it is? Nikki needs to find out before things go any further.

The Secret in Mossy Swamp by Rita Monette is the third story in the Nikki Landry Swamp Legends series. I have not read the first two books, but I found that this one was easily read as a standalone. This is an engaging story set in the fifties and is a fun adventure where kids have to use their imagination and put their minds to something to get it done and solve problems. This is a great message for kids – we don’t need to rely on technology to have fun! The story romped along at an even pace, with lots of action and twists and turns. The characters were developed well, as was the plot, and it all wrapped up very neatly at the end – the way a good story should. This will make ideal reading for younger children and early teens.
