L.A. Hill's The Secret of the Quail follows the adventures of a young nature enthusiast. Benny Z is a young boy with a keen interest in anything related to nature. Benny still remembers the last time he spent at his granddad's place, planting vegetables in the garden and feeding the chickens in the chicken coop. When his mom says he can visit his granddad this weekend, Benny couldn't be more excited. However, Benny's "bad thought bird", Stan, has plans of his own, and he is determined to play on Benny's doubts. Upon his arrival at his granddad's, Benny shares everything he learnt about quails with him. He also finds the opportunity to take a picture of a Cooper's Hawk in the woods. And he makes sure to note down every experience in his nature journal.

The Secret of the Quail is a heartwarming adventure for kids, featuring a few gentle life lessons to help them overcome their doubts and insecurities. Author L.A. Hill crafts an engaging narrative that beautifully illustrates how shared interests and passions can bring two generations of people together by helping them bond. Hill's brisk pacing and concisely written story make this such a breezy read. Benny and Jim are in different phases of their lives. However, their interactions show the strength of familial bonds and how these only get stronger with time spent together. Personally, I learnt a lot about quails from this book. I didn't know there were so many different types of quails. I also enjoyed that Benny got the chance to see a Cooper's Hawk once again. It's an adventure that children and even young adult readers can enjoy. Highly recommended.
