In The Siphoning by D.T. Stubblefield, readers are introduced to Drakon, a skilled assassin, covertly armed with magical powers, serving the ruthless King Ewen in the mystical realm of Somorrah. Amidst executing royal orders and maneuvering through the intricate power structures of the kingdom, Drakon stumbles upon a harrowing prophecy revealing a demonic force posing as a goddess, seeking revenge. Despite having acquired his power through pain and hardship, the prophecy's fulfillment might require Drakon to sacrifice it. Meanwhile, a disastrous mission leads him to rescue a slave girl, using his concealed magic, thereby unearthing an even more perilous task: the elimination of the High Priestess, the spiritual backbone of Somorrah, and the only real challenge to King Ewen's reign. As Drakon ventures to protect his world, others, like the healer Eza, view his universe as the real monstrosity.

There can be no question that The Siphoning by D.T. Stubblefield is the start of a terrific saga as the first book of the Redemption series. I personally struggle to read fantasy novels told through a singular lens as it is often the most questionable characters that enrich the narrative. I felt the book hit its most engrossing stride when Stubblefield takes us to Melika, a disguised goddess figure who can siphon magic from a mage and make him physically horrifying. The magic structure and hero quest of Drakon, and his fallibility as a character that makes him authentic, is made better by his arc. Drakon is unaccustomed to leading but with guidance entrusted to Eza, a skilled healer and daughter of a respected leader, he ends up with some 2,000 warriors being led out of Napata City after a spectacularly depicted battle. I loved the giant Meko and Stubblefield's worlds, which we enter through portals and the land of Somorrah which yields a huge surprise on arrival. Overall, this is a solid entry into a new series and an absolute joy to read. Very highly recommended.
