The Siren (Book one in the Laments of Angels & Dark Chemistry series) by Meg Xuemei X is equal parts young adult, fantasy, science fiction and dystopian genre all wrapped into one. The story is a refreshing and unique take on the mythical creature known as the Siren. The plot revolves around a main protagonist named Lucienne Lam, the strong female lead who is the Chosen One and fated to rule as the last of the sirens. During the course of the story, Lucienne embarks on an epic journey to find The Eye of Time before her enemies find and destroy her first. Enter love interest Vladimir, the mysterious and complicated Ashburn, relentless and unrelenting enemies along with high-powered battle scenes – well, let’s just say this book is one exciting ride!

I really enjoyed The Sirens by Meg Xuemei X. The author has crafted such a rich and engaging world featuring a riveting cast of colorful, realistic and multi-dimensional characters. The vivid descriptions, emotional entanglements and action-packed sequences will have readers up long after bedtime just to see what happens next. A central theme in the story and one the plot line revolved around is making choices and ultimately making the right choices. Every day we are faced with choices, and whether we want to make them or not, we still must choose. This is a very deep and introspective theme that will have readers reflecting on their own choices in life. Fans of young adult, paranormal and fantasy genres (and those who tire of the endless vampire, zombie and werewolf novels) are sure to find a new favorite author in Meg Xuemei X!

In The Siren - Laments of Angels & Dark Chemistry by Meg Xuemei X, Lucienne's birth was so special in many ways, but more so because the privileged Siren bloodline had not seen a female baby for thousands of years. And then the baby girl went on to pass the sacred Siren test, thereby marking her as the heir to the Siren's throne and the first female Siren. This immediately earned the little girl numerous enemies among her family members. Under the guardianship of her grandfather and a trusted protector, Lucienne was raised to be the next great leader, and by the time she was fifteen she was as fierce and brave as any Siren, if not even more so. Imprinted in every Siren's DNA was the overwhelming aspiration to locate the Eye of Time and it was no different for Lucienne. The dangerous quest for the Eye of Time took her many places until she finally landed in the lost city - a place that held the promise of answers she so desperately sought, but also presented dangers beyond even her comprehension. With all the forces in her life colliding, the already too complex equation that was her life became even more intricate; there was Vladimir - the love of her life to whom her kiss was poisonous to a lethal degree; Ashburn - a boy from the lost city to whom she was bound by fate; an almost immortal enemy determined to put an end to her life; and not to mention her lifelong enemies back home.

The Siren - Laments of Angels & Dark Chemistry by Meg Xuemei X is a flawless blend of sci-fi, YA fantasy, supernatural events, romance, adventure, action, suspense and intrigue. It is a captivating mix of medieval settings with advanced technology, ancient cities and practices, super sophisticated tech labs, time travel and physics theories millions of years ahead of time, and yet all of it feels so effortlessly believable. What is absolutely fascinating about the book is how Meg Xuemei X managed to effortlessly blend these contrasting themes so flawlessly to give the reader a thrilling experience. The already exciting plot is brought to life with vivid descriptive writing and characters that are fresh and have real depth. The Siren - Laments of Angels & Dark Chemistry - is a one of a kind young adult story and the start of a truly captivating series. I cannot wait to read book 2 and see where this awesome adventure takes us.

Meg Xuemei X's novel The Siren follows Lucienne, a girl who is destined to lead her family/people as the Siren. In order to prove to the rest of the family that she is capable of leading, Lucienne teams up with Vladimir Blazek to retrieve three ancient scrolls from three important Buddhist temples in Tibet. While they were retrieving the second scroll, their whole plan was foiled when thousands of monks began to chase them, resulting in Lucienne being shot in the chest. However, Kian reported that Lucienne wasn't shot by the monks, but by another enemy instead.

This novel is packed with characters who are well rounded as well as realistic. Lucienne is a girl that everyone will either love or hate, and that is not necessarily a bad thing. She is hot tempered and very reckless, but at the same time really loyal and kind. Her strong heart and iron will will touch the hearts of many. The dialogue and interactions between characters are also really nice. The way they speak and the way the dialogue is timed make it very realistic. Vladimir and Lucienne speak exactly like teenagers are supposed to, full of witty humour and immaturity here and there. Suspense and strong action are major highlights of the plot. I really enjoyed reading about major escapes and battle scenes throughout the novel. The author also manages to hook readers in the first few chapters, a very important factor in every novel.
