In The Sound of Breaking Ice by Lee Richie, there was a siege at Lily Field Elementary. Special Agent Raymond Waring of the Federal Bureau of Investigation went back in alone in an attempt to save some of the hostages. The second time Ray came out, he collapsed with a head wound. Surgeons successfully removed bullet fragments from Ray’s brain, but a tumor was discovered during the surgery. Unless the tumor is removed, Ray will die. Ray, Jess, and Scottie were best friends, but after Claire died, their friendship unravelled. After Ray’s diagnosis, he decided to return to Great Lakes. Ray needed to make amends. Not long after Ray's return, the first person is murdered. As the bodies pile up, Detective Barnabas Lawrence realizes that all the victims were somehow involved with Ray. Will Lawrence and Ray be able to stop the killer before more people are murdered?
The Sound of Breaking Ice by Lee Richie is a complex work, with several plots woven expertly together. The pace was fast with enough action to keep me engaged throughout. The writing style allowed me to become part of Ray’s journey to make amends. The events were described in detail, making it easy to visualize. I had several suspects in mind, but with the unexpected turns, I was proven wrong every time. The characters each had a background that enabled me to get to know them and understand their actions. The book was brilliantly written and had me hooked from the start. The suspense kept me on the edge of my seat, and I could not put the book down. I enjoyed reading this book and was surprised by the ending; it was totally unexpected.
