What would happen if imagination dried up and people could no longer feel happiness? The Spirit of Imagination by S.A. Tawks describes the situation when Emily Rainn, a young woman looking for work, discovers the answer the hard way when she meets John Crawford and experiences the excitement of supreme story-telling after drinking some distilled imagination. Emily learns that imagination is a commodity that can be used for good or abused. Mr. Crawford discovered a way to extract the enjoyment that had been absorbed into the pages of beloved books and use it to maintain and increase his own ability to write best-selling stories. Unfortunately, others have also discovered the secrets of ‘spirit’ and have different ideas about how to use it. Will crushed spirit be produced that ends people’s interest and joy in simple pleasures? Will imagination become easy to obtain and cause people to lose themselves in worlds of make-believe? Emily, along with Mr. Crawford and his butler, Walter, promise to guard the secrets of ‘spirit’ and not let anyone upset the balance of emotions.

The Spirit of Imagination is an entertaining yet thoughtful look at the power of imagination. By treating the spirit of imagination as a measurable product, it provides an opportunity for interesting characters to use and abuse it. A look into the process of creativity allows Tawks to tell a pair of stories – the ‘reality’ Emily, Mr. Crawford, and Walter are facing and the fantasy of Emily’s imagination when she succumbs to the effects of too much spirit. Both are well-developed and keep the pages turning in this creative fantasy story.
