The Spread by Sean Deville is book one in the Lazarus Strain chronicles. The world is about to be swallowed up by a zombie apocalypse. Gaia is an organization tired of human overpopulation and decides to take matters into their own hands. For months they’ve been killing the world’s top scientists from the shadows. American and British intelligence know there is a threat but they don’t realize just how lethal it will be. It all starts in Bangkok, Thailand with a little scratch from a scalded cat. Unknown to Dang, he is the first human carrier of the Lazarus virus. Spread by contact, body fluids, and air, the contagious virus spreads from Asia to all corners of the world. No one is prepared for the devastation when the dead begin to rise.
For years now, conspiracy theorists have alluded to a shadow government working to eradicate a chunk of the world’s population. Sean Deville takes the conspiracy theory and turns it into a horror to end all horrors. Reading this book, it feels like The Spread could happen right now. The reader is forced to really imagine the worst case scenario. The horror of this story is not just the zombies but the fact that all these powerful governments came together yet they could do nothing to stop such an attack. The vulnerabilities of our current governments are laid bare and it is scary. In spite of all the talk, is the world really ready for another plague? The author’s style of writing is different but resonates well with the story. Fans of The Walking Dead TV series will enjoy this book immensely.
