The Steal is Book 1 of Sunset City Secrets by Ella Kane, and a great start to the series. Bella is a Reiki practitioner with dreams of becoming a screenwriter. Jason is the son of Lewis Hall, who embodies the stereotypes of the domineering father and the heartless corporate property developer. Lewis has just bought the building where Bella’s practice is located, and he wants her gone. Jason is sent to deliver the bad news, but falls in love with her at first sight. How can he help Bella keep her studio and, at the same time, move forward with plans for his own independence? As Lewis raises the stakes, Bella and Jason search desperately for ways to stop him. Her friends and Jason’s half-brother Damien rally around, but can they stop Lewis? How far will he go to achieve his goals? Can love really conquer all?
The glamor and charm of Santa Monica provide the sunny backdrop for this engaging love story. The Steal is funny, romantic, and suspenseful, full of plot twists that will keep you turning the pages. Ella Kane subtly depicts the contrasts between the ruthless corporate world and Bella’s loving circle of friends and family, and the choices that Jason must make as the story progresses. The characters, many of whom will be greeted by the reader with a smile of recognition, are well drawn and true to life. Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys contemporary romance with emotional depth, suspense, family ties, betrayal, and a happily-ever-after ending.
