The Treasure of Gwenlais by M.T. Magee is an epic fantasy romance about a prophecy in which a female heir will unite two kingdoms. However, there are those that fear the prophecy's fulfillment and set plans in motion to thwart it. The highly sheltered Princess Laurel of Gwenlais finds herself reliant on the help of neighboring Prince Caleb of Heathwin, who is considered quite barbaric by the people of Gwenlais, but whom she has known and adored her whole life. In the fight to thwart the many threats on her life - be it man eating plants, highly trained assassin cats, Lethal Rabkin creatures, or regular old humans - they must learn to work together and trust each other in new ways as well as also overcome personal weaknesses and kingdom prejudices.
This book by new author M.T. Magee was light on the fantasy and heavy on the romance, which was still mild and clean. Even still, the fantasy elements were uniquely imaginative and added something extra to what would have been an enjoyable medieval Celtic romance. The fantasy elements create unusual twists and turns to the journey that Princess Laurel and Prince Caleb must take in order to fulfill the prophecy. I particularly loved the bantering dialogue between many of the characters. Magee has great insight into people and humor. She has created loveable characters that suck you into the Kingdoms of Gwenlais and Heathwin, and has imagined wonderful fantasy elements to create a world that you won't want to leave.
