The Trials of Browid by Stephanie Bosshard follows Selena, running her family’s café after her mother’s death and her father’s disappearance. Her ordinary life is shattered when she receives warnings of danger and a pendant linked to her family’s hidden past. She's part of the Semper lineage with extraordinary powers, some hidden by protective wards and some dangerous if unleashed. Guided by Gabriel, a deliciously mysterious and powerful ally, she trains in combat, elemental control, and mental defense. Along the way, she meets other gifted individuals and faces enemies from rival supernatural factions known as the Fallen. Her journey takes her beyond Maine into shadowed woods, ancient mansions, and trials conducted by the rigid Blessed Council, who test her loyalty, powers, and courage. She uncovers family secrets and a prophecy that centers on her in a hidden world where every ally and enemy has their own powers and their own agenda.

“There is a prophecy about a child born with multiple gifts, one who would change the world...you, Selena, are the prophecy.” Stephanie Bosshard’s The Trials of Browid is an ambitious and really well-executed fantasy adventure in a carefully and thoroughly built world. We first meet Selena in Maine, in a little coffee shop that is, in a testament to Bosshard’s skill in texturizing space, as clearly imagined as the manor house in which we spend so much time with her further down the line. Gabriel is absolute spice, and my goodness, the chemistry between him and Selena is brilliant. The romance is organically unfurled with some seriously swoony moments that can only happen when powers interact through the tattoos. Action is fierce, from wing training and hemomancy, to blood-and-mud stuck to hair, introducing trials and gold daggered fight scenes... Bosshard’s writing is on a constant throttle forward, and I'm excited to see where we go next. Very highly recommended.
