The Unhappy Quokka by Jane Kopper Hilleary is a fun kids’ story about an animal that lives in the land of kangaroos and koalas. The quokkas live on an island, and they are the happiest animals in the world. People come from all over to visit the quokka island and have their photos taken. But one day, the quokkas notice something is wrong – Stanley is sad. How can this be? What can they do to cheer him up? They get together and come up with some ideas. Will the quokka dance do the trick? The quokka joke? Or does Stanley need something else to cheer him up? Something only his best friend can give him?
The Unhappy Quokka by Jane Kopper Hilleary is a fun read with some lovely illustrations by Maddie and Jessie Page, but it also offers kids a valuable lesson on the importance of friendship. It’s a simple story revolving around an unhappy quokka and the lengths his friends go to to make him happy again, but it’s also a lesson in empathy and understanding. Jane has created some cute characters that kids will love, and these types of characters make it easier for kids to relate to and understand a story. The language is simple and easy to follow, and the story is gentle, ideal for a bedtime story. A beautiful tale, it ends with a powerful message – sometimes, we all need someone to hold our hand and sit quietly with us. Kids will love this story, and they’ll want to read it again.
