The Unruly Orchestra by Daphna Lustiger with illustrations by Sverdlov Yelena is a sweet tale of musical instruments trying to play music together when their conductor doesn’t show up. The illustrations show both the looks and personalities of these dedicated instruments. Bassoon, trumpet, clarinet, French horn, harp, piccolo, tuba, trombone, flute, violin, contrabass, cello, pipe organ and drum all have their own ideas, chirping, beeping, and twittering. “Together and apart,” the musical instruments take the stage. They need a leader. Each instrument’s voice needs to combine with the others. The author says, “Music is the source of energy that motivates our lives...From the moment of birth to old age music influences our emotions and process of thinking.”

Storyteller Daphna Lustiger and illustrator Sverdlov Yelena clearly love music. They love each instrument and the sounds it can make. They love the sound of an orchestra. In The Unruly Orchestra, they show how the different musical instruments work together by each having a unique sound. But without their conductor, their sound isn’t music. Sverdlov Yelena’s detailed yet delicate illustrations show the instruments becoming frustrated, unable to do what they love - to combine their sounds in harmony and beauty. The tuba puffs out his cheeks. The cello pats his side. The harp brags about her history. The drum gets ready to beat his own tummy. Each instrument can find its proper place on the stage. They all know their parts. Can they work out their melody without their leader? Should they go wild and have fun? What will make them truly happy?
