The Wilds of Cancer: A Life-Affirming Journey by Rick Lamplugh takes readers on a journey through Rick’s struggle with and recovery from prostate cancer. Rick begins by describing the circumstances leading up to his diagnosis while on a hike with his wife, Mary, and a friend, Fred. He further writes about his initial struggles with denial, fear, anger, and impatience upon diagnosis. After a meeting with his urologist, a few weeks after the diagnosis, Rick has to face the challenge of deciding on his treatment method, either through surgery or radiation. He also discusses why it is crucial to seek support and the significant lifestyle decisions he had to make, which include regular rest, exercising, cultivating a positive attitude, improving his diet, and reducing sugar consumption.

Reading Rick's story was both inspiring and took me on a rollercoaster of emotions. There were many things about this book that stood out to me. I commend the author for meticulously documenting his story, providing hope to those going through similar situations. I liked that every medical term was explained properly so that readers are not confused. From Rick's story, I learned to take responsibility for my health, create a support system, conduct personal research to evaluate my health options, and make well-informed decisions about my health. The writing is detailed, well-paced, and easy to comprehend. It features themes of survival, hope, love, support, healing, and more. I recommend The Wilds of Cancer by Rick Lamplugh to anyone battling with any form of health challenge, particularly cancer.
