The Wish by Michael Scanlon is a story of regret. Sara Jones is on holiday with her parents and brother in New York. Her brother, Matthew, has always annoyed her and, in a fit of pique, she sees a fortuneteller and makes a wish that he would die. The next day, Matthew is run over and killed while out running. Sara believes that she is responsible and that, if she could just go back and wish it had never happened, everything would be fine. Changing her appearance and “borrowing” money from her parents, she runs away and gets the bus back to New York, to try to find the fortuneteller. Her journey is a perilous one but it gives her time to grow, to deal with situations and people she never thought she would ever face. When she finally arrives in New York City, she heads for the fortuneteller. Can things be reversed or has she wasted her time?
The Wish by Michael Scanlon is an amazing story. I was hooked and desperate to find out what happened at the end. Although some may say the ending was a little predictable, there is more than a story here. This is a book of life, a book of discovery and a story of learning to live with what life throws at you. It’s a life lesson, one that teaches us that, perhaps, no matter what we think, we really do not have any control over what happens in our lives. I thoroughly enjoyed this. I found it to be extremely well thought out and well written. The character assessments along the way were clearly researched before writing and, overall, I believe Mr. Scanlon has a winner here.
