“Timothy knew the shades of his own nightmares. Nothing could save that woman. The smoke always got what it wanted.” Nightmares, evil, and a sense of inescapable dread define Coyotes' Cross: The Erebus Trilogy, Book One, a novel by Anton Brinza. Set in the small town of Scofield during the mid-90s, the story follows a family falling apart and a community reeling from several kidnappings and disappearances. For the Closson family, particularly young Timothy and his brother Darrell, dreams of a shapeless entity demanding unspeakable horrors bring the dreaded Coyotes' Cross Prowler closer to home. With both father and son slowly unraveling and an unstoppable malevolent force demanding more death, events spiral out of control. Determined to protect his family from both himself and this shadowy harbinger of destruction, Darrell is about to discover that not only can dreams hurt you, but that outrunning a nightmare may not be possible.
Expansive and skillfully composed, Coyotes' Cross by Anton Brinza is a good example of a well-executed horror tale. The plot centers on a family falling apart for multiple reasons, and their continued downward spiral as a mysterious entity wreaks havoc, with dark themes permeating the narrative. Strong character development, including a well-rounded and sizable cast, fleshes out the story, with many fascinating individuals to connect with. While the pace is moderate and slowly builds sustained tension, it is the author's skill in using multiple POVs that caught my attention, as immersion and flow were retained despite the story shifting perspectives so frequently. For fans of horror, Coyotes' Cross checks all the boxes and is an excellent addition to the genre.
