As parents we often develop a special bonding situation or tradition with our children. Some last a short time and some last years, but we secretly hope they last a lifetime. A father and his young daughter shared quality time together every day when they walked through the park to a fountain where they would each throw in a penny and make a wish. Of course the little girl, being young and curious, wanted to know what her father wished for and would ask him each time they threw their coins into the fountain. The father would smile and simply say, "If I tell you, it won't come true." The father watched his daughter grow into a young woman and start her own life and eventually move away. Will their special bond last? Will they ever walk in the park to the fountain again?

The Wish by Ken Elliott is a children's pictorial story introducing its reading audience to the concepts of traditions, bonding, secret wish keeping, and growing up. Author Ken Elliott tells a heart-warming story of the love, devotion, traditions, and bond between a father and daughter in a simple but elegant way, using vocabulary, dialog, and plot a young reader can understand and adult readers can appreciate. The illustrations are skillfully drawn, and although not in color are still delightful. Not having the illustrations in color gives the opportunity for young children to utilize this book as both a storybook and coloring book as they read and color in the drawings. The book and extra coloring activity can be used in the home, school classroom, or library for a 'keep busy' quiet time activity.
