Daniel R Hersch’s The Witch-Bane, book two in The Death Keeper Chronicles, takes Alexander Wren and his vampire wife, Yiyao Shi, into a Phoenix murder investigation narrated by Death himself. When five-year-old Morgan Fowler is killed in her bedroom and occult markings cover the walls, the Court sends Alexander and Yiyao because the case points beyond an ordinary homicide in Phoenix itself. Morgan was a Dual, a child with powers linked to portals, which makes her death part of something older than the police report can hold. As the killer studies another child and Alexander follows the evidence through forensic paperwork as much as encrypted clues, the investigation draws closer to Court politics while an enemy claims that murder can be holy before Thanksgiving week ends.

Daniel R Hersch’s The Witch-Bane is a hard-hitting Christian thriller, and the investigation feels both procedurally and spiritually dangerous. The best part is how Alexander’s old police training is useful even when the case leaves normal homicide behind. His reports give the book the feel of a real file, but the killer’s belief system turns the evidence into something far darker. As horrible as it sounds, that's what makes the story sing. Hersch takes Alexander and readers into a twisted climax and the killer’s warped logic, before the story moves into its most brilliantly brutal kicker. Yiyao Shi is fleshed out, and her ancient history never eliminates her tenderness. Hersch uses her ferocity beautifully when horror asks for sacrifice. Well written and haunting, readers who enjoy Christian thrillers with supernatural warfare will adore this book.
