The Words of My Father by Mark Tedesco is an interpretation of the Lord's Prayer, told as a father-son bedtime activity. Joseph is not sleepy, but his father Giuseppe tells him that it's time to go to bed. Wondering why he has to go to bed while not tired, Joseph devises a plan to stay up a while longer by asking his father questions about the meaning of the prayer they say before bedtime. Giuseppe sensed that his son wanted to avoid going to bed, so he also devised a tactic. He would help Joseph understand the meaning of the prayer by explaining the meaning of one phrase from that prayer each night. Joseph is happy with this arrangement. Giuseppe starts his interpretation of the meaning behind the phrases that make up the Lord's Prayer.

Mark Tedesco gives fresh insights into the Lord's Prayer by outlining the meaning of the phrases, making this story a reflection of the weight of the words used in the prayer. The explanations for the phrases are given with examples to clarify their meaning. I found the story behind the phrase 'give us this day our daily bread' compelling, as Tedesco outlines why we do not ask for weekly or monthly bread. The explanation behind 'your will be done' is also very thoughtful and insightful, which made me realize the importance of this phrase. Even more important is how one can link each phrase with meaning and impact on our lives. The Words of My Father is an insightful addition to anyone wanting to know the deeper meaning of the Lord's Prayer.
