The Worst Halloween Book in the Whole Entire World is an unusual picture book written and illustrated by Joey Acker. The minimalist style is a triumph of design that will keep the reader laughing till the very last page. Witty comments and dry humor abound in this adorable tale. Our nameless main character has a grumpy, pessimistic personality, with expressions that tell the reader more than words can express. Nameless, stunned that readers are still turning the pages of what, in his opinion, is the worst Halloween book ever, counts the reasons why this book stinks. Nameless reluctantly follows Jerry Pumpkin on a trick-or-treat trip before finding themselves in a harrowing situation, but there is the hope of candy.
The Worst Halloween Book in the Whole Entire World by Joey Acker is a hilarious story that children and adults will love to read together. From the first page, I knew I was in for something spectacular. Simplistic illustrations partnered with hilarious banter kept our family laughing page after page. It is amazing how a slight change to an illustration can produce so much emotion. Have you ever seen a rock smirk? The caustic humor is non-stop. After reading this to two of my grandchildren, Caroline (age 7) took the book to re-read the story to her younger sister Ella (age 3). To my delight, I later saw Ella reading the pictures and telling her version of the hilarious adventure. Thankfully, this is just one book in a series by Joey Acker. We will be adding this and more to our family bookshelf.
