“Professionals don’t have feelings, don’t have thoughts. They don’t have an autonomous life outside their function.” Perhaps some don't, but the professional in Fabio Amabili's novel, There's A Young Man Dressed In Blue, is a human being first and foremost. The protagonist is Avvocato Floriani, a self-conscious but brilliant young corporate lawyer working in Milan. He receives a new and difficult assignment from his firm, only to realize that something doesn't add up. Meanwhile, on the Adriatic coast, strange happenings pique the interest of the locals, as well as a solitary figure walking his dog on the beach. As two distinct and separate worlds prepare to clash, a mystery unfolds, one that not only threatens to ruin lives but also exposes the best and worst in all of us.
Unusual and at times disjointed, There's A Young Man Dressed In Blue by Fabio Amabili is an unexpectedly poignant and clever tale. The novel begins with what appears to be two separate plots (or stories) before offering the first of several surprises, which I won't reveal here. Behind this story, numerous themes, including manipulation, corporate skulduggery, and a man's choice to do what's right despite personal costs, elevate the reader's emotional immersion. In addition to the brilliant plot, excellent character development is also present, especially with the meticulously crafted protagonist. The pace is fast, and while Fabio breaks some rules regarding POV and structure, his judicious interspersing of Italian into the narrative goes a long way in creating the right atmosphere. For anyone seeking an intelligent contemporary tale with truly unexpected twists, this book is for you.
