In Tides, Lies, and Alibis by Taffy Beach, take a trip back to the '90s and visit a small town in Florida. Kate MacGregor is an artist, and while her name gives her a reputation as the last heir of a Florida dynasty, it certainly hasn’t helped her bank account. But at least it’s somewhat peaceful. However, that quickly changes when the Spring Berry Festival ends in tragedy. Her friend Cindy is at the center of the scandal, thanks to her delicious “Immaculate Confection” strawberry cream puff. While Kate was confident it would rate well in the Berry Bake-off, she never expected it would end up being dubbed the most likely murder weapon. Kate’s only option to help her friend is to don the hat of an amateur sleuth and find out who really did it.
The backdrop of the '90s is a fun choice, and readers who enjoy historical-leaning mysteries will want to add this to their shelves. Taffy Beach makes you feel like you’ve traveled back a few decades and will leave you reminiscing. The characters are delightful. Kate is a sleuth who is spunky, artistic, and clever enough to hopefully get herself (and her friend) out of trouble. The small town in Florida is the perfect setting for an assortment of quirky locals that keep the tone light and the situations just chaotic enough. From Cindy to Kate’s Scottish father, the characters bounce off Kate’s energy and make every scene feel like an energetic back-and-forth. There are several lovable animals, from a mouthy parrot to an adorable dog named Sharkbait. A standout in the story is the dynamic between Cindy and Kate, with a friendship of loyalty and bickering. Their dynamic will make you laugh, but it also drives the mystery forward. The mystery takes plenty of twists and turns with Kate uncovering family secrets, old grudges, and even connections to her own family’s past. A fast-paced read that will keep you guessing, Tides, Lies, and Alibis has delightfully quirky characters and a writing style with fun at every turn of the page.
