Time Enough by Lise Mayne begins at the start of the twentieth century with a mining family on the Isle of Man struggling to survive as their livelihood deteriorates. Facing inevitable displacement, Euphemia and her son Henry prepare to leave their ancestral home. Financial support from a relative allows them to emigrate to Michigan. Euphemia remains wary of past entanglements that could endanger their future. Despite Henry’s wish to stay behind and protect their farm, the family is compelled to move. Their relocation marks the beginning of a thirty-year endeavor across North America, from Michigan to Manitoulin Island and ultimately to Saskatchewan. Throughout this journey, they confront deception, violence, and the loss of stability, fighting to establish a new foundation in unfamiliar and often hostile environments.
Time Enough by Lise Mayne is a fantastic saga that melds together historical realism, folklore, and emotion. Mayne's writing is elegant while remaining grounded, allowing us into both the physical world and the inner lives of her characters with striking clarity. Mayne has a knack for turning settings into symbolism, such as the family's cramped, chaotic domestic space on the Isle of Man as a metaphor for emotional confinement and generational obligation. The historical backdrop, meticulously detailed and exhaustively researched, goes a long way in the portrayal of the immigrant experience. I found the draconian health policies of the time and the fear and control imposed on immigrants shocking, but it all plays into Mayne's handling of identity and transformation. The infusion of faery lore adds a haunting beauty and altogether makes this epic a great read.
