To Conquer Death by Richard H Moon is a captivating historical fantasy that follows the journey of two Kemetish brothers, Koshei and Tyfon. Set in ancient Egypt, Koshei and Tyfon, who have risen to be great commanders in Pharaoh's army, lead the army against a threat from the Sea People, who try to invade the Egyptian coast. However, after their victory, they discover that the motives of the invaders are not to conquer but to seek refuge against a terrifying darkness that brings corpses back to life. With this discovery, Pharaoh demands that the brothers tackle the source of this plague. Accompanied by two former invaders, Doryah and Yaga, Koshei and Tyfon lead an expedition on a dangerous journey across the Great Green Sea. They journey through abandoned civilizations and a frozen wilderness, where they are confronted by a large army of the dead.
The world-building was exceptional; I was immediately immersed in the culture and concept of the ancient Egyptian kingdom. The deep relationship between the brothers was really appealing. Their opposing temperaments, like Koshei's intellectual control and Tyfon's reckless reasoning, kept me engaged. The plot revealed how simple military encounters could evolve into a more terrifying crisis. Richard H Moon did a great job of developing the characters; every character felt important. The book kept up a relentless pace and was filled with lots of captivating action, like Bronze Age naval battles. To Conquer Death beautifully covers the themes of duty, spiritual balance, and the true cost of eternal peace. I recommend it to readers who enjoy historical fantasies and dark epics about brotherhood and the zeal to conquer death.
