Jack Heape's To Die A Hero is a sci-fi military novella from the Orion Federation Series. After dropping out from the Moulin Military Academy, much to the chagrin of her father, Caroline Jacquier (CJ) joins the Federation Navy. Meanwhile, there is an ongoing war between the allied forces of the Colonial Army and Navy against the rebels on the planet of Lille. Calling themselves Yellow Jackets, they want autonomy from Moulin and have acquired support from the Tarascan Empire-backed confederation of pirates known as The Collective. On her very first assignment, Ensign CJ is promoted to the squadron VA-2's assistant ops officer under Lieutenant Joe "Hack" Hackle. Now, CJ must undertake a deadly mission as one of the pilots of the six Falcons tasked with an emergency tactical evacuation operation involving a platoon of Marines trapped in enemy territory.

Jack Heape's gripping novella is filled with edge-of-your-seat action sequences and nailbiting thrills that make it hard to put the book down for a single second. Imagine the Top Gun movie franchise in book form, and you will end up with something like To Die A Hero. Despite the futuristic sci-fi setting, Heape's narrative is gritty and realistic, just like the battlegrounds of real-world war environments, and it makes you feel the stakes as you find yourself rooting for your heroes every step of the way. This is an action-packed thriller with an emotional heart at its core, and you can't help but become invested in the fates of even the secondary characters. I loved the plot and Heape's characters and highly recommend the book to military fiction readers and space opera lovers alike.
