In her latest novel, To My Senses, Alexandrea Weis delves into the emotions of the lovely Nicci Beauvoir, a nursing student living in New Orleans. The author draws upon her extensive knowledge of the landscape, people and passions of the Crescent City, transporting readers to its French Quarter charm in all its beauty and turmoil. After a chance encounter while stopping to admire the work of an artist named David Alexander in Jackson Square, Nicci realizes that they had met before, and that there is an immediate emotional connection with him. He is handsome, comforting, talented, and exciting with an artist’s temperament. He’s perfect for her. She is beautiful, loving, emotional, and unpredictable. She is perfect for him.
The novel makes for delightful reading at times, but its message is ultimately the power of passion and love that capture Nicci and David. The love scenes are breathtaking in their emotions and spontaneity, with a passion that seems to each of them to be timeless. Then their world went dark. To My Senses is an engaging love story of emotion and sensitivity that blends perfectly with the romance and humorous scenes. The artist and nursing student encounter emotional twists and eventually sadness. Weis takes an altogether fresh look at the transforming power of love. Her characters are well developed with crisp dialogue.
The book is a must-read for those who want to take a romantic journey with two lovers who seemingly were meant for each other, although different in many ways. They overcome social and human barriers and obstacles in order to share their love with each other. But there is a sadness to its outcome that will leave readers with a feeling and awareness of how fragile love and passion can be between two lovers.
