Trolling for Murder by Charlotte Stuart is the second book in the Vashon Island Mystery series. Lavender Lewis, aka Lew, finds herself once again in a murder mystery when a morning walk takes a deadly turn. A body is discovered at the base of a 20-foot-tall wooden troll statue. After the body is identified, a local teacher is the likely culprit, but Lew isn’t so sure. There’s nothing Lew does better than stick her nose in other people’s business, and she’s willing to do what she can to find a suspect with a more logical motive. Every time she gets close, she faces another dead end. When the case takes an intense turn, with two teenagers disappearing and a bully with a questionable agenda, she may be in over her head, leading her to face an ethical dilemma.
The mystery takes twists and turns that keep you guessing as it becomes more intense. Various characters build the island's community and give plenty of suspects. Lew's delightful dog sidekick has a unique name and a friendly attitude that adds humor throughout, while also leading her to the body. Charlotte Stuart drops you directly into the mystery, with the body almost immediately found. This sets up a fast-paced tone that doesn’t slow down until you reach the end. A poignant part of the story is the theme of bullying, which Stuart explores at various instances throughout. You see this both with Lew facing a former bully and a teen facing a similar situation, serving as a reminder of the deep impact bullying causes as it impacts each of the characters. An addictive page-turner, Trolling for Murder is an unexpected delight with engaging characters, a satisfying conclusion, and plenty of twists and turns.
