Truth Transforms Education by Dr. Antoinette Pearson is a passionate appeal to servant leadership in schools. Dr. Pearson has served over twenty years in urban education, and her work as a principal in an under served school combines with her insights from her doctoral studies to make this an informative and encouraging book for educators. She encourages leaders to consider cultural context and stresses the importance of listening to your stakeholders, which include students, teachers, and parents. Several chapters conclude with practical exercises for exploring significant ideas such as your moral base and how to enact servant leadership in your context.

I am currently pursuing a doctorate in education so I especially appreciated the principles in this book. Dr. Pearson comments with the voice of experience on some of the current educational theories such as transformational and servant leadership. She also promotes the concept of equitable opportunities for learning. As I read, I asked myself over and over again, “What does this mean for an educator?” I could see school boards purchasing this book for all those in leadership throughout the school system to read and discuss.

Dr. Pearson points to the need for developing a culture of collaboration as well as transparency of communication in our schools. She observes: “Current reforms being applied to many of our priority districts and schools are barely addressing the dishearteningly deep issues and challenges.” Perhaps there has never been a time when we need these precepts more to help people at every level work alongside one another to meet our common goals. Truth Transforms Education is a powerful encouragement for all leaders in education. Highly recommended.
