Twisted by Time by RL Perez is the first book in the Timecaster Chronicles. Desi's life hasn't been one full of sunshine. She lost her parents after a demon murdered them and was left to be taught magic by her familiar Kismet who gives her no time for slacking off. When her friends take off for a vacation in Miami, Desi is left with no way to afford a ticket, but with magic at her means, she attempts a teleportation spell. Only instead of sending her to Florida, she's sent back into Cuba, 1898, putting her in the war between the United States and Spain. To top off her problems, this isn't the only war where she finds herself in the middle. As the Spanish-American war rages on, Desi discovers a magical war that puts her in the sights of the dangerous demon lord, El Diablo. To find a way home, she must trust new allies, including a handsome soldier that also happens to be a warlock, and discover a surprising spark that she doesn't see coming between them.
This is a brilliant kick-off to a new series with action, adventure, and time-traveling chaos that is fun and original. The setting shifts to Cuba, 1898, during the war between the United States and Spain which is the backdrop for a magical war against El Diablo. These two wars are reflective of each other with RL Perez capturing the details with a genuine touch, and propel Desi toward her own destiny. The people she encounters in the past impact her future with a soldier named Oliver becoming a quick partner and ally in this war. The spark between them is one of chemistry and potential as she's pushed to open herself up to someone, potentially tearing down the walls she maintains. Twisted by Time is a charming freefall into the past with history, commentary, humor, action, adventure, and romance creating an addictive start to a series.
