In Twisted Flip, we meet Katelyn again, the star of the Home Renovator Mystery series by M. E. Bakos. Newly married and somewhat at a loose end in the mansion she now shares with her husband, Don, and Boots the cat, Katelyn decides to buy a Cape Cod to flip. Then she discovers that the house has quite a reputation, as it was the site of the gruesome murder of a young bride, twenty years ago. Even though the crime is believed to have been committed by a woman jilted by the husband of the victim, Katelyn finds some hidden notebooks that cast doubt on the verdict. Meanwhile, she’s having trouble finding workers willing to help her with the rehab, and it looks like her marriage to Don wasn’t registered correctly after all. The problems begin escalating with a series of break-ins and threatening phone calls. Someone clearly doesn’t want her to find out the truth about the murder, but Katelyn isn’t one to back off.
Twisted Flip: A Home Renovator Mystery is an engrossing read on many levels, with the mysterious notebooks, the house rehab, and the relationship between Katelyn and Don. M.E. Bakos has created an appealing heroine, and I especially liked the part where Katelyn and Don care enough to take Boots the cat with them when staying at a hotel after the mansion has been burglarized. There’s a lively cast of characters that keep the story rolling along. Fans of home rehab TV and cozy mysteries with an edge will enjoy this book. Highly recommended.
