Ugly Dog Sweaters and Other Indignities by Ken Van Camp is a humorous short story anthology narrated by Keke, a clever dog offering a canine’s-eye view of human life. In Pawprints in the Concrete, Keke and her human share a lazy afternoon in a hammock, reflecting on the value of naps and ancient Roman innovations like siestas and concrete, which inspires Keke to consider leaving her legacy in freshly poured pavement. In The Ultimate Alarm Clock, Keke markets a playful “Rent-a-Puppy Alarm Clock,” using morning licks and the sound of impending vomit to wake up children quickly and cheerfully, followed by a calming nighttime fuzz therapy. In Traveling the Not-So-Friendly Skies, Keke endures a chaotic first flight in a cramped carrier, facing delays, discomfort, and indignities en route to visit her family’s pregnant daughter, drawing humorous comparisons to life in the womb.
Ugly Dog Sweaters and Other Indignities: A Collection of Fun and Heartwarming Stories from Keke's Guide to Training Your Human by Ken Van Camp is a playful, well-written assortment of short stories told from the delightfully mischievous perspective of Keke, a sharp-witted Biewer Terrier. Each story offers a humorous and affectionate look at the ups and downs of life with humans, as seen through a dog’s eyes. Keke’s personality shines through every page, and the inclusion of charming photos adds an extra layer of joy. Out of the 39 stories, my favorite is Being Ghosted, where Keke’s hilarious, slightly dramatic reaction to being left alone captures the spirit of the collection perfectly. With equal parts silliness and sincerity, this book is an entertaining read that celebrates the bond between pets and their humans in a way that’s lighthearted and endlessly enjoyable.
