Uncle Charlie Killed Dutch Schultz is a rollercoaster of a true-crime read, blending the grit of a noir thriller with the quirkiness of a dark comedy. The author Alan Geik is a masterful storyteller with an insider view, adding all the nuance and dramatic effect needed in this hardcore Jewish Mafia tale. Spanning 50 years of organized crime, the book is rich in details and descriptive scenes, giving the reader a snapshot of history. He mentions Ford and Hitler and their mutual admiration. Early on, the scene is set with Geik reflecting on a comment: “While these Italians were killing each other off, we were making fortunes in gambling, rumrunning and a dozen other things.” This was a time of casinos and speakeasies and a host of illicit revenue-generating activities. Shoot first and ask questions later, or rather don’t was the way that crime bosses ruled.
Alan Geik’s prose is sharp enough to cut through steel, keeping you on the edge of your seat with unexpected twists and turns characterizing the stellar storytelling in Uncle Charlie Killed Dutch Schultz. Every character is painted in shades of grey, making it impossible to distinguish the heroes from the villains. Just when you think you have it all figured out, the narrative takes a sharp left turn, leaving you reeling. If you're looking for a book that will challenge your perceptions and keep you guessing until the very last page, Uncle Charlie Killed Dutch Schultz is a must-read, especially for fans of mob literature written from an insider point of view, making it all the more authentic.
