Unstoppable: Forging the Path to Motherhood in the Early Days of IVF by Ellen Casey chronicles her struggle against infertility and her perseverance through disappointments, various surgeries, and infertility treatments. In 1974, a doctor presented Casey with an experimental IUD that had not been approved by the FDA. After causing her to have a serious infection, the device ultimately led to her inability to conceive. In the memoir, Casey narrates her devastating experiences as she faced each failed attempt and other disappointments she encountered along the way. The memoir documents her courageous journey which led to her becoming one of the world’s first mothers to have a baby through IVF. She also describes the objections that IVF technology faced then and how she helped change popular, negative opinions about the technology by sharing her experience.

Unstoppable is a heartfelt and uplifting memoir that will inspire hope for anyone struggling with infertility and for all others who want to gain insight into the journey. Throughout the book, I was inspired by Casey’s resolve despite facing devastating loss and multiple discouraging disappointments. The memoir also records the noteworthy achievements of many medical pioneers who developed ground-breaking medical techniques, technologies, and treatments that feature in the book. Unstoppable provides an enlightening perspective into what it took for medical doctors to develop the IVF technology despite opposition. It also highlights the courage of the IVF mothers who took part in the process. Ellen Casey’s powerful memoir offers hope and provides important insight into the history of IVF. The entire book is well-written and organized.
