Some of the strongest messages come from people who are honest about what it takes not only to keep going, but also to pause, heal, and begin again. Unstoppable shares the personal experiences of four Black women leaders: Marla Lewis, Karen S. Wells, Kelly Copes-Anderson, and Stacia Gowens. They write about various times in their lives and the people, choices, challenges, and changes that helped shape them. Their memoir is divided into The Roots, The Breaking, The Rise, and The Legacy. Although their paths differ, each piece explores what happens when plans change and life requires someone to stop, reconsider what matters, and move forward in a new direction. Throughout the book, the authors also include “Unstoppable Lessons” drawn from their journeys and reflection questions that encourage readers to think about their own circumstances. What can their stories teach us about being unstoppable?
Unstoppable by Marla Lewis, Karen S. Wells, Kelly Copes-Anderson, and Stacia Gowens was very inspirational. I especially appreciated the message that being unstoppable didn’t mean that you never struggled, stopped, or needed time to recover. Sometimes it was about getting back up, changing direction, or realizing that your definition of success had to change. I thought that was an important reminder for everyone, not just women in leadership positions. The “Unstoppable Lessons” were the best part because they pulled meaningful ideas from each woman’s experience and gave readers something to take away. The “Unstoppable Reflections” were also very valuable. Questions about the people who believed in you, the paths you have taken, and who you are still becoming could lead to surprising answers. The writing was honest, thoughtful, and easy to follow, while the alternating voices and shorter sections kept the pace moving. These authors showed that setbacks didn’t have to determine what happened next. Anyone looking for a memoir about resilience, personal growth, sisterhood, and finding strength during difficult seasons should pick this one up
