Violations of Causality: A Skip Gershwin Mystery by Herb Guggenheim is a quirky and unpredictable mystery that blends satire, romance, and science fiction. Skip Gershwin is a creative writing student who becomes the prime suspect in the murder of his professor. His life spirals into chaos as he's torn between his feelings for the enigmatic Austrian au pair Gudrun and the seductive art student Lana. As he navigates academia’s dark underbelly and encounters increasingly bizarre characters, Skip discovers that reality may not be as linear as it seems. Guggenheim’s novel is a witty, madcap adventure brimming with humor, mystery, and unexpected twists.
Author Herb Guggenheim has a great sense of balance in the themes of this exciting and genre-bending story with a truly unpredictable plot that still makes perfect sense. I also really enjoyed the narrative voice as the story is packed with sharp dialogue, and the humor and satire make even the darkest moments entertaining and memorable. The character development matches this sense of wit perfectly. Skip’s self-absorbed incompetence makes him an imperfect and relatable character who is a refreshing change from many proposed heroes in this genre. The clues laid out in this classic whodunit are also well-placed and timed to create a thrilling and unconventional mystery that readers will certainly enjoy. Overall, I definitely recommend Violations of Causality for mystery fans as an accomplished and clever read they'll devour from cover to cover.
