In Kris Paulsen's Galaxy Walkers 2: Unity of Worlds, Lyra and Archie are Universe Walkers, humans whose awakened minds let them cross galaxies using extraordinary abilities. Their enemy, Saros, is a Walker who is Archie’s presumed-dead mother. Archie builds a device intended to stop her plan to reset their universe under her control, but an attack hurls both teenagers through a wormhole. Saros follows them into another universe, where they crash onto the planet Draemir. The wormhole closes behind them as their powers disappear, leaving no obvious route home. Their return depends on obtaining the Unity Core, which can be reached through five trials with a dragon named Xandros. The trials require Saros to accompany them, placing Archie beside the mother he considers an enemy while their original universe is beyond the closed wormhole.

Kris Paulsen’s Unity of Worlds is an excellent young adult science fantasy adventure, and Paulsen brings imagination to its alternate reality. The science is speculative, and the rules are easy to follow, especially in Dragonspine, where Elder Dragons combine frequencies into melodies humans can hear. That imagination extends to ArmorTec, protective clothing that hardens on contact while remaining flexible during movement. Paulsen handles the ethics of the Walkers' abilities thoughtfully, asking what responsibility should accompany powers capable of affecting entire worlds. Her character writing is excellent, such as when Lyra returns to an electromagnetic spectrum essay after experiences far beyond Earth, keeping her everyday life present. Paulsen has created a highly enjoyable blend of science and fantasy that I recommend to young and young-at-heart readers who like speculative worlds governed by unique physics. Very highly recommended.
