Warning: I Published with a Scam Publishing Company! by Peggy Jo Henry is a collection of several stories, journal entries, poems, and other outlets, all original, and all leaning into various emotional and philosophical themes. These include but are by no means limited to, Wolfie, which recounts an emotional hospital experience, accentuation empathy, and emotional control; Final Destination, a reflection on spiritual transformation and the importance of seeking guidance during life's challenges; and Music, which discusses the power of music. Quotes are presented in the spirit of inspiration and peace, critiquing societal issues like violence and advocating for charity and environmentalism. The poems include Curious, which humorously portrays a cat's inquisitiveness, while Midnight Love offers a lighthearted reflection on nighttime romance. Each piece emphasizes emotional growth, introspection, and a deeper understanding of the reality of life.
In her book Warning, Peggy Jo Henry delivers a very personal anthology that feels true and raw and completely from the heart. Her writing, though at times unpolished, is authentic and the result is that it's also engaging, drawing us into her journey with a unique blend of vulnerability and strength. The standout piece to me refers to the title and is called The Scam. Henry gives an account of being deceived through publishing fraud. After investing thousands in a service that promised robust promotional support, she found herself left only with unfulfilled promises and poor communication. She shares how it is rectified in another piece called What I Did. Henry is courageous enough to share these pieces of herself with the world. Overall, the collection is thoughtful, thought-provoking, occasionally funny, and will no doubt leave readers who connect with it feeling more empowered than when they started.
