Raven and the Witch by Wendy Pym follows sixteen-year-old Raven Shikoba, a Mohawk girl trained in shapeshifting magic by Silent Wolf, the medicine man who raised her after her parents died. A prophecy places Raven at the centre of danger when Ivy, an old blood witch living in the Zaltana Mountains, begins hunting her for the power in her blood. Raven leaves her people with Otter, the young hunter who has protected her since childhood, while Silent Wolf guides them toward Ivy’s poisonous stronghold. Under a coming blood moon, Ivy seeks the rare devil’s horn flower, a plant that can turn her witchcraft into a greater threat. To protect her people, Raven must draw Ivy away before the witch claims the magic she wants.
Raven and the Witch by Wendy Pym has all the heart-thumping danger that fantasy readers crave: a young Mohawk shapeshifter marked by prophecy becomes the target of Ivy, a blood witch who wants the power in her veins. I loved the worldbuilding, and Pym's Zaltana Mountains feel dangerous before Ivy even appears; her poisoned fortress turns the land itself into part of the threat. The magic system works because Pym makes power physical. Raven changes form and shields her companions with light, later paying for flight. Readers: here be dragons! Pym's characters are fully fleshed out, although I admit that Otter is my favorite, making loyalty somehow feel tender. Well written and immersive, I look forward to seeing where Pym takes us in her next installment of the Bloodlines of Destiny series. Recommended.
