We Birth Us is a poetic narrative written by Ophelia Brown, featuring illustrations by Sarah J. Heidelberg. The story follows two lovers, Soleil and Solon, who are separated by memory. Solon has loved Soleil throughout different times and circumstances, even when she cannot remember him. They have painted together on cave walls, communicated through electronic lines, expressed their love through songs and poems, and provided comfort to each other in times of fierce rain. However, their bond is tested as Soleil becomes broken by trauma and loss. She seeks solace in Melodist, a shell dweller who has also undergone a significant transformation and crossed eternity to be with her. Their heavenly union, however, is short-lived, as Solon returns to retrieve a letter in Soleil’s possession that holds immense power and reveals their shared history.

We Birth Us is a thought-provoking story that combines poetic prose and spiritual insights to explore themes of love, pain, loss, and rebirth. The characters in the story are deeply complex. Many readers will resonate with Solon’s unrequited devotion, Soleil’s pain and grief, and Melodist’s patience. This narrative conveys a profound message: love is not accidental but purposeful and sacred, requiring authentic connection and trust. The story explores not only a couple's love, but also God's unconditional love for those who feel undeserving. Ophelia Brown also addresses deep issues such as sexual violence, unplanned pregnancy, and child loss. The beautiful illustrations enhance the narrative and bring the characters to life. This is a wonderful read for anyone who enjoys stories about lovers across time and the healing and purpose that can be found through love.

We Birth Us by Ophelia Brown is a poetic story that follows the journey of Soleil and Solon, star-crossed lovers who have experienced multiple lifetimes together. From sharing a fruit in a garden to drawing on cave walls and communicating through computer code, their deep love transcends time and form. They touch each other with their souls, providing comfort amid life's storms and playing music that binds them for eternity. However, trauma, grief, and death find a way to test their bond. During her darkest moments, Solon found solace in the Melodist, who recognized her sorrow and helped mend her heart. Yet, with Soleil's return, Solon must make a choice that could change everything.

We Birth Us is a poignant exploration of rebirth and a love deeply rooted in memory. The book is beautifully written, with poems from different characters that flow as one unit. Ophelia Brown’s writing is smooth, and readers won't be able to tell where Soleil begins and where Solon ends. Their journey spans lifetimes, galaxies, and worlds as they seek each other, illustrating the strength of their connection and the uniqueness of their love. The story carries a spiritual undertone, delving into themes of prayer for loved ones, the healing power of God, and the role of destiny in our lives. It thoughtfully addresses the impact of trauma, reminding readers that they can be whole again and find peace, even in the pouring rain and after the loss of a loved one. The poems are paired with artwork by Sarah J. Heidelberg, inviting readers to pause, engage with the imagery and emotions, and explore their profound meanings in relation to the narrative. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates poetic narratives that explore love, healing, and divine timing.

We Birth Us by Ophelia Brown follows Solon and Soleil, who meet across multiple lifetimes, recognizing each other in dreams, daily routines, and shared experiences. They live through moments of fear, storms, and uncertainty, supporting one another as they move through spaces both familiar and unfamiliar. Solon recalls being overlooked in past relationships, while Soleil follows her faith and instincts, guiding decisions and offering reassurance. They wade through the dangers of a letter that could cause harm, taking precautions and making choices together. Music, movement, and shared domestic life anchor their connection, and they observe each other’s reactions, learning to act in ways that preserve trust. Over time, they build homes, maintain gardens, and spend days with children, returning to the people and places that sustain their bond across time and circumstance.

Ophelia Brown’s We Birth Us is a luminous and unforgettable experience that is so unbelievably unique in its use of verse to tell a story. Brown gracefully captures the intimacy of shared presence and, through two voices, effectively paints a literary picture of how connection can span distance, time, and even dreamscapes. Brown’s portrayals of Soleil and Solon are almost ethereal, but it is others, like the Melodist, who drive their arcs in a way that feels painfully real. Every exchange, from whispered guidance to musical collaboration, is constructed in a heartfelt celebration of transformation, both literal and emotional. The format is unusual, but it is perfect for what Brown accomplishes in such an ambitious work. Alongside recurring motifs of music, soliloquy, and light-filled landscapes, this is a story that truly invites readers to savor connection and marvel at the beauty of enduring bonds. Recommended.
