Thirty-seven-year old Lily Lambert is stuck in an unhappy marriage to Greg, an abusive and controlling man. After 18 long years, Lily is overweight, feels unloved, and has low self-esteem. Her decision to join her local gym is her first step to take control of her life before it spirals down further. New friends come into the picture, including the charming James Lattimer. More than just a romance, O.C. Shaw’s What Goes Around Comes Around, part one of Lily's Story, is about a woman finding her strength and her own place in society.
O.C. Shaw keeps the plot at the beginning of the novel attention-grabbing enough to hook readers. The story of how Sara’s present life came about, as well as moments from her past, are woven in captivatingly. Then the story reels you in further with Lily’s affair with James, whom she first met at the gym and how she tries to find her feet when her controlling husband Greg finds out about it. I think Shaw successfully portrays Lily as more than your typical middle-aged wife in a life crisis, showing her to be a brave woman who is struggling emotionally and physically. James, too, is not your typical charming man, as he comes across as a man who genuinely cares for Lily and seems to have a secret of his own. Shaw also realistically captures what it is like being a woman like Lily who changes and grows throughout the story. Overall, this is a novel that is adroitly written.
