What Kind of Dog Are You? by Elena McBride, with illustrations by Blake Marsee, follows Nacho, a friendly dog, on his morning walk in the neighbourhood. He is a curious type of dog who loves meeting new animals. The first one he meets is in the park. Nacho asks: “What kind of dog are you?” The robin kindly replies that she’s a bird and not a dog. She says that she has feathers and a beak, lays blue eggs, and eats the earthworms she finds in the soil. Nacho says goodbye and keeps walking. He then crosses paths with a rabbit, a snail, a flock of geese, a squirrel, a caterpillar, and a cat resting by the water fountain. Each animal politely greets Nacho and tells him what makes them unique.
Elena McBride’s writing style is simple, with a repeating pattern that makes reading smooth. This approach makes the facts feel like a discovery. This is the kind of story that quietly teaches young readers about the animals around them. But what makes this book special is that it encourages children to be curious about others. Nacho sets a good example of how to approach someone and start a conversation. In addition, the animals' responses give kids an idea of what kind of information they can share about themselves. Overall, What Kind of Dog Are You? Nacho's Neighbourhood Walk is a great addition to any child's bookshelf, making it easier for every child to initiate a friendship.
