What Nature Teaches Us: A Book About Being the Light is a remarkable book for children by nine-year-old author Clay Vilhauer, co-authored by Amber Vilhauer, and illustrated by Joni-Leigh Doran. This eye-opening book takes us through the objects of nature we have known since early childhood and taken for granted, offering us a new perspective and clues, and inviting us to notice how we fit in and what we can learn from nature. We look at the sun, the moon, a star, a cloud, the wind, the rain, the rainbow, a bird, a tree, a flower, grass, a river, the ocean, a rock, and a mountain. Then we are invited to go outside, explore, find elements of nature, consider what we can learn about them, and then share our knowledge with others. So, what lessons do we learn from this insightful book?
What Nature Teaches Us impressed me with Clay Vilhauer’s observations and Amber Vilhauer’s support in bringing this fascinating book to us. Writing a book is a major challenge even for adults. Clay has excelled at such a young age, with a praiseworthy choice of a highly topical theme and depth of insight. I was astonished by Clay’s descriptions of the natural phenomena in which he identified human-like features. I also must praise Doran for the tasteful, artsy, minimalist illustrations that acted like beacons without detracting from the narrative. This book shows Clay’s maturity in his pursuit of writing, and I had an immensely enjoyable time of reflection when reading it. I highly recommend this unique, wonderful, and thought-provoking book to pre-teen and older children, teachers, child carers, and everyone interested in the fascinating lessons Clay learned from nature and shared in this fabulous book.
