What Would the Boss Do? 2.0 by Jerry Roth tells the story of Mali, a struggling business owner, and her retired neighbor Jerry, a former commercial lighting company president who lost his own job after twenty years at the top. The book opens with the two meeting on a porch in a working-class neighborhood in 2012, where an easy conversation about her five-year-old daughter and his time in the Air Force in Thailand slowly reveals how much Jerry knows about building a business people want to work for. Structured around a series of Wednesday meetings between the two, the story follows Jerry mentoring Mali through the same hard-won lessons that once made his own company thrive, while separate chapters throughout the book step outside the narrative to give readers direct, practical advice they can apply to their own workplace. It's part business parable, part memoir, built on the idea that culture, not just profit, is what keeps a company alive.
Jerry Roth writes in an easygoing, conversational style that makes the business lessons easy. Mali's personality, all emotion and sarcasm, gives the book real warmth from its opening pages. The pacing alternates cleanly between Mali's ongoing story and standalone advice chapters, which lets readers either follow the narrative straight through or jump to whatever lesson they need most. Jerry himself is a believable mentor, shaped by his own failures rather than presented as an untouchable guru, which makes his advice feel earned. The theme running through every chapter -- that happy employees create happy customers -- gives the book a simple but effective backbone. I appreciated how Roth roots big ideas in small, specific moments. What Would the Boss Do? 2.0 is a friendly, practical read for anyone building a business worth working for.
