In the paranormal mystery Whatever Happened to Emmeline? by Nicole Schubert, Clara is haunted by recurring dreams, suffers from severe asthma attacks, and is emotionally weakened by infertility and loss. Clara leans on therapist Dr. Goldberg for support in all of this, as well as growing discontent in her relationship with Seamus. Seamus suggests they take a break from their successful professional lives by spending the summer at his family's lake house, but Clara resents feeling pressured to 'fix' herself. She does find comfort in her plants and a newly remodeled kitchen. During a session with Dr. Goldberg, Clara uncovers memories of trauma and physical association with her asthma. Strange visions and encounters with a red-haired teenage girl lead to an investigation into the past, particularly Seamus and his brother Derek's connection to Emmeline McGuire, who went missing years ago and may just be linked to Clara's present experiences.
I have a sister who is a hypnotherapist by profession and past life regression is a space I really want to explore but have not been able to yet. Needless to say, what I thought was a simple 'until then' snack turned out to be a fabulous treat. Whatever Happened to Emmeline? by Nicole Schubert ticked every single box I hoped it would, and more. I loved that Schubert builds the story from rock bottom, which is essentially where we find Clare, to this incredible feeling of enlightenment. That transition from darkness to an airy light comes through the pages, slowly but surely. Clara sure does have to work for it though. And bless Dr. Goldberg, who is essential to the process. I think readers who are new to paranormal stories that are within the realm of possibility contextually would enjoy Schubert's work. Think of it as a gateway novel. We get a little bit of help understanding hypnosis, past life, and the world beyond the veil at an easily consumable level, and it is wrapped up neatly in an arc that delivers the literary goods. Overall, this is a well-written novel with a sound mystery and a few surprises. Very highly recommended.
