When Legends Run Free is a work of fiction in the sports, slice of life, and interpersonal drama sub-genres, and was penned by author Ken Norton. This college-set dramatic work is based in the world of competitive running, and we find ourselves following the exploits of a skilled cross country team, and the challenges they face from the administration, their own personal lives, and their enigmatic coach. In a character-led tale, we meet each member of the squad along the way, finding ourselves involved in their school, family, and romantic dramas and how that affects their careers in the sport. There is also a very topical commentary on the state of such sports in the present day laced into the background and context of the tale.
Author Ken Norton has crafted a niche work that will certainly offer many delights to those who have lived this lifestyle and enjoyed the world of collegiate sports for themselves, but it’s also a great opportunity for newcomers to enter a brand new world of discovery, and meet characters whom they can come to know and love. The work is very emotive as the stakes get higher and higher for the team and school, offering some heartfelt moments mixed with humor, drama, and even a romantic subplot which was highly entertaining. All of this mixes into the author’s obvious experience and expertise in the subject area, with an attention to detail that educates as much as it entertains. Overall, I would certainly recommend When Legends Run Free for those who are in the know, but also to any reader looking for strong character-led drama.
