When the Squirrel Sings is a delightful work of children’s fiction in the form of a picture book written by author Shana Askew Hollowell and illustrated by artist Jennifer Finch. Focused on the themes of animals and the natural world, this calming rhyme story encourages young readers to explore the beauty of nature by tuning all of their senses to the outside world. The squirrel in the title watches from his tree, singing happily about all that the world has to offer, and sending a message of positivity and appreciation that is both joyful and infectious to read.
Encouraging children to play outside is becoming a more and more pertinent theme as time goes by, and this book does a great job of celebrating both the natural world and outdoor activities that children can engage in. The illustrations by Jennifer Finch are colorful and engaging, with a realistic portrayal of its excellent central character, the squirrel, that children may be likely to see, and bright colors that uplift the prose and accompany its celebratory atmosphere.
Adding to this, the beautiful rhymes and clever wordplay of author Shana Askew Hollowell make the overall experience even more heightened. The rhymes are well-paced to give a good flow to the action, making them melodic enough to sing along with the squirrel in the trees and hear its happy tunes echoed back. Overall, When the Squirrel Sings is definitely recommended for children and their guardians alike for its bright presentation and encouraging message of joy.
